Knee Replacement
Knee replacement, also known as knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure in which a damaged or worn-out knee joint is replaced with an artificial implant or prosthesis. This procedure is typically performed to relieve severe knee pain and improve function in individuals with advanced arthritis or other knee conditions that have not responded to conservative treatments.
Here’s an overview of the knee replacement procedure:
-
Preparation: Before the surgery, your orthopedic surgeon will conduct a thorough evaluation of your knee, which may include X-rays, MRI scans, and blood tests. You’ll also discuss your medical history and any medications you’re taking. If you’re deemed a suitable candidate for knee replacement, you’ll be scheduled for the surgery.
-
Anesthesia: Knee replacement surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia, which means you’ll be unconscious during the procedure. In some cases, spinal or epidural anesthesia may be used, which numbs the lower half of your body while you remain awake.
-
Incision: Once you’re under anesthesia, the surgeon will make an incision over the knee joint, exposing the damaged joint.
-
Reshaping the Bones: The surgeon will remove damaged cartilage and bone from the ends of the thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia) and reshape them to accommodate the artificial components.
-
Implant Placement: The artificial knee components are then placed into the prepared bone surfaces. These components typically consist of a metal alloy for the femur, a high-density plastic spacer for the tibia, and sometimes a plastic button for the kneecap (patella).
-
Alignment and Testing: The surgeon will carefully align and position the components to ensure proper function and stability. The knee’s range of motion and stability will be assessed.
-
Closure: Once the artificial components are securely in place and the knee functions properly, the surgeon will close the incision with sutures or staples. A sterile dressing is applied over the incision.
-
Recovery: After surgery, you’ll be moved to a recovery area and monitored. Physical therapy usually begins soon after the procedure to help you regain strength and mobility in your knee. You may also be prescribed pain medication and antibiotics to prevent infection.
-
Hospital Stay: The length of your hospital stay will vary but is typically a few days. In some cases, knee replacement surgery is done on an outpatient basis, allowing you to go home on the same day.
-
Post-operative Care: After discharge, you’ll continue with physical therapy and rehabilitation exercises at home or at a rehabilitation center. It can take several weeks to months to fully recover and regain normal function in your knee.
Knee replacement surgery can significantly improve the quality of life for individuals suffering from chronic knee pain and disability. However, like all surgeries, it carries some risks, including infection, blood clots, and complications related to anesthesia. It’s essential to discuss the benefits and potential risks of knee replacement with your orthopedic surgeon and follow their recommendations for post-operative care and rehabilitation.
